Unit 2: The Externally Set Task
I really like this photo of disguise by Steinburg because of the family portrait being changed in to a portrait of disguise. I like how the masks all are different to show a different personality. The black and white really brings out the masks and every feature involved. I like how the people are arranged in a formal setting and all of them have a different body language. Also their clothes are really formal. The background is quite clear and there isn't that much going on so I immediately look at the masks.

My first response to disguise.
Evaluation
I took a series of photos revolving around disguise. I used a DSLR to capture these photos I used the black and white colour scheme because of the inspiration of Saul Steinberg work because his photos are not in colour. I also thought that the change of colour gave it a different meaning and effect. Firstly I captured photos of just the masks covering up identify. I set the DSLR in focus then I chose the colour. I then thought that the background should be random so that the photo didn't look like its suppose to be there but then I thought that it looked like there was to much going on in the background and the focus wouldn't be on the masks (disguise). I selected 2 students at first so that there wasn't to many people at first because I wanted to see if the change in how many people there was would make a difference. turns out that it really did. I then thought about the different backgrounding to see what would work best i chose other students of different heights, I then placed them in front of a thin tree so the focus was mostly on them but, the arrangement didn't go to well so I carried on to experiment with the same background, I then moved on to other students sitting on a bench, and again it worked well but i wanted more focus on the masks. I then asked random people to take a photo with a mask on, and luckily i asked 6 formers who were familiar with what i was trying to do so there posture and how they were really related to the topic of disguise and they also gave me some feedback and what I should look up. so after taking photos out in the natural environment with the trees (outside open area) I went inside to the studio and I thought about lighting and close ups and the effect of light. I took photos with different amounts of groups at first then I focused on one person and used lighting to change the focus on the mask. I focused up from the shoulders so you could really just see there face. Then I focused on up to 4 people and took photos from different angles. Then I changed back to colour and they didn't work out well so I only produced 3 photos.

Next I am going to look into a different part of disguise because I want to see which is best now I am looking at using different parts of the body to disguise the identity of your face. I like how artists have either drawn on a face on to there hands and covered there faces and i like how some artist have taken pictures from a magazine and stuck it to there face to cover up there own identity having aspects of others identity.
Next steps
I am looking at various photographers and I really like the different techniques that they use to I am going with 3 techniques one being cut out magazine facial features and pasted on to your face, the second is looking at baby photos and holding them in place of your older face and the last one is drawing faces on your hands to cover up your identity.
Do magazines change your identity?
How did I do this?
Firstly I researched so much around disguise and i came across a different tecnigue and type of disguise and that was cut up magazines pasted on to someones face which changed the way they looked and i really liked that idea. so I gathered multiple of magazines and cut out facial features and I came across so many different features that I could use. I identified the key and the best way of using this idea so I began by taking photos on my iphone. I jumbled up all the facial features and chose them randomly so that this idea was unique and intresting.

Exploring different disguises
I have decided to carry on with my magazine work because it is really interesting and unusual also there are many ways I can disguise the body with using magazine faces and body parts because it looks very effective. Ways I can adapt this:
|
At home experimenting with animal features
These photos were images taken naturally because I was experimenting with random photos and using different backgrounds to see if it effected the photograph. I like the topic of playing with animal features because it unusual. What I would say is I need to focus on more of the ace so only a little of the photo has a background because if there is to much going on in the background the focus drops of the face and to the background. and the photo of the baby and my hand I thought it was effective but the writing on the hand ruined it so it really does matter with the background because it doesn't give such a good effect.
overlapping photos for disguise.
I started of with an original image then I overlapped both images one of a cat and one of me. After I simply overlapped them in photoshop then, I adjusted everything to make a fit so it was neat and more of a natural photograph I had to adjust the size of the photos so that they were roughly the same size so that it would have been a lot neater when overlapping then, I used a blending tool to blend the images together then I smoothed out the edges so that it was much of a clearer image . |
Magazine work
I have decided to stick with magazine work and cutting out facial features because it worked really well and there was so much more that I could do with this idea.
Three of the best
Dmesh
What is DMesh? DMesh is a custom creative application that turns images into techy artwork.
How did I do this? At first I had taken individual photos with magazine parts stuck to parts of the face on a dslr camera. Then I exported the photos on to Iphoto. I exported them to a large scale.I then opened up a app called Dmesh. After I dropped a photo in at a time then I took the point of so that I could do it directly without it all ready being done then once I thought it was at the best it could be I saved it. But before hand I selected all the parts of the face to make sure that you could see the picture without blurring it to much so that you couldn't identify the original photo. |
I then decided to develop original photos using the Analog app. I chose a particular filter for the photos that featured a light leak effect. I found that this filter was the most interesting and further disturbed the images, helping to disguise the faces.
What went really well with these is that the filter created another disguise because of the lighting. The filter worked differently on each photo which worked really well.

My chosen theme is Disguise. I chose this because I thought it was a really creative theme that I could experiment with and there are so many resources associated with this particular theme. When I chose the theme all I really thought about was everything behind it and what it involved which was a lot of experimenting and I like to experiment with different objects. I also really like the idea of disguising your identity. I have explored photographers who explore the theme of disguise. I feel as if i have fully developed idea of disguise and Im pleased with both final pieces.
I researched photographers around the theme but I particularly looked at Saul Steinberg, which helped me with a lot of inspirations to do my own work working with masks. I looked at the different ways he explored the theme of disguise and I realised how creative the theme of disguise was I could use so many materials to form the sense of disguise. I started off with making a Pinterest board so that I could see so many different disguise ideas. From that I gathered so many different ideas and out it in to one idea which was when I created my first series of photos.
My first series of images was taken on a DSLR and I used plain masks with different facial expressions and of different sizes. at first I was taking random pictures for example in corridors and class rooms until I realised that the background effected the whole image so I started to use the studio which had a much more clearer background and there wasn't that much going on so that the photos looked more professional. I took individual shots of people at first but then I done small groups to see the difference and the effect that it would had. I had to focus on the lighting on the face so that the camera was in focus and so that there was a light so that the photo was clear and also had a slight glow on the masks. My second set of images was taken with a iPhone which was good because the phone was able to be really close up and the filter on the phone created an effect which is called chrome. The second set of photos were taken with n intentions it was just an experiment but then I enjoyed this type of disguise and i started to develop this idea.
At this point I was doing magazine work but because I didn't really know what to do I decided to move on to photoshop and paste animal faces on top of human faces but I didn't really like it and there was nothing else to do after there were no adaptations. It was quick and easy and it didn't challenge me enough. Then I went back to working with magazines which leaded on to my final pieces. I cut out so many facial features of different sizes and texture to create a different image and I used masking tap to make the face more visual other than using your hands because it would block some of the face.
I then decided to move on to magazines which was an inspiration from Pinterest. I cut out magazine features that Was a mixture between animals and human beings at first i just arrange the features differently I let the choose what the wanted and I didnt really think about how to develop the idea so after I experimented with that with holding the features with hands and just titling your head and balancing them on your face. I then used masking tap and stuck them down to your face of all different sizes which worked out really well. I took close ups so that you could see up from the shoulders. which was then developed in to one of my final pieces. To get to my final pieces I used the same photos but I used different ways to present them for example for the first set I used a D-mesh app which added on shapes to show disguise as-well as having the different size facial features so that it was a unusual final piece. then for my second piece I used the original photos again and just used a filter called light leak effect which pasted lightening on to the face.
My final pieces was of magazine work. I decided to disguise the face with magazine features such as lips, and eyes. I came around to this idea from the development of masks because it didn't really work out well. I got the inspiration from Pinterest which originally was covering the face with hands but I adapted this further with magazine parts being on top of the face disguising different features. Which has worked out really well and I'm very impressed because I started on a wobbly start and I didn't have no idea with what i really wanted to do because I became unstuck ant one pint but because I noticed the magazine disguise worked out really well I adapted this and I used filters and apps to see how different they would make the photos.
