Moving images
Eadweard MuybridgeMuybridge is the man who used photography to explain how a horse moved which other photographers were un able to find out. He proved that horses ran with all for legs sometimes off the ground. He created something that no one had ever seen before. He managed to work out how horses moved.
The images opposite show first the series of photographs of a horse in motion. A series of wires we used to capture the images and release the shutters of several cameras which were arranged alongside a track. |
Animated GIFs
These images were created on an iPad using an app called MoPhoto which creates animated GIFs. I then 'melted' the GIFs on the internet using an application called Gifmelter. I was inspired by Muybridge's experiments above so I thought I would take moving images of something unusual and a routine of going to the toilet, falling from a high place and jumping.
An animated GIF is a type of graphic image which is designed to play a sequence of stills repeatedly. There are now various apps available which make it easier to create animated GIFs.
The website gifmelter allows you to take the URL of an animated GIF and distort it in unusual ways. I have posted some examples below of screengrabs taken from the site of the melted version of the GIF opposite. |
Now that we have been thinking about the relationship of moving images thanks to Gif melter, let's take a close look at two related processes for this type of concept - Stop Motion and Time Lapse. Stop Motion is a type of technique mostly used in animation whereby still images (sometimes photographs) can be made to appear to move by linking them together at a certain number of frames per second.
Stop motionI like this stop motion film because it illustrates a day at a beach and includes unusual clips of a shark eating pretty much the whole of a fish when a man is fishing in his boat. It's good how everything links together and behind it there is a story.
I think this artist used this to communicate an idea because it shows step by step an illustrated story and is really creative. From this stop motion clip I have learnt that stop motion is a creative way to show ideas and is you can experiment with different objects to create a good outcome. |
Time Lapse
Time lapse films are created very similar as a stop motion film but does have a crucial difference. The gap between each individual image has normally got a longer gap between each image wich is then linked together to make it as if its moving very quickly. This effect is normally used in nature documentaries or some films.

Time LapseI like this time lapse film because it has different effects and many colours that capture my attention. It has calm music for a background whilst many things are going on in the moving images.
For the artist to make this film I think that they had taken many images and put them together to make a much quicker moving image. The overall effect is dream-like and fast-paced. |

This time lapse is different to the previous one I have chosen because it shows change over a longer period of time and does not move as quickly. I think this effect is to show the process of natural decay.
It is similar because it still shows the changes and different images over time and is made the same way. This type or time lapse can be considered art in a gallery because it's still life and works a bit like a moving painting. |
